In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our opening follows most of the typical genetic conventions of thriller film, the main conventions we used in our opening is the crime which occurs in the narrative, the extraordinary events which are presented in a mysterious due to the audience not knowing exactly what happening and the lack of identity of the characters. This causes tensions when uncovering what has happened to the girl and identifying who the killer is. We have used a protagonist who has hidden secret which is slowly revealed in the opening sequence through the flashbacks and hidden identity of the killer. Many of the scenes in our opening have been influenced and created based on other thriller films which we analyzed in our research and planning, this is shown when we see the killer following the protagonist in the forest. This has been used to add tension and confusion because the audience is unable to see the complete identity of the killer. These are common conventions used within thriller openings; we also used conventions such as a dark surroundings which the events occur in and vulnerability of the protagonist. Our opening has been created so the speed is fast and therefore creates mystery and makes the audience connect with the protagonist. We used our opening on the conventions which were similar to “Jaws” the dark surroundings and quick camera movements to help make the opening effective but unclear at certain points. The scenes of the protagonist in the psychiatrists office ahs been used to produce light but also create mystery of the physiatrist and what is occurring in the office. This could also be said that we challenged the conventions of a thriller film because we continuously jumped back and forth from scenes in the way of flash backs which reveal more identity of the two characters and at the same time hide identity which may have the audience asking questions about who the psychiatrist really is. These conventions which we have used therefore result our opening falling into a sub-genre of a psychological thriller because it is created around the psychology of the characters.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our thriller opening has been targeted at a range of social groups and these have been represented in our opening. Our opening only consists of two characters, one is the antagonist who could be seen as any normal character in the film or as the killer. We have two characters one male and one female and this has been used to create the stereotypical views of fragile girl being a victim seeing for help. However the male character in the opening could be views as the protagonist due to him being there to support and help the girl or as the antagonist who has a secret which may be revealed. There is a slight use of gender stereotyping due to the girl looking and acting in an innocent way and the killer being presented as an older and larger man capable of these actions. At the same time we have challenged the stereotyping by creating mystery to whether the male is in fact guilty or innocent and this has been achieved by costumes. The male has been created to look smart and respected however in flashbacks a male character that isn’t identified appears to be wearing black clothing and covered which is a stereotypical killer appearance. The target audience which we are aiming our opening sequence at are those aged between 15-24 years and mainly males, however we hope to attract female audiences and to do this we have created an opening to best suit our target audience. We have chosen this audience because have chosen characters which are aged similarly and the plot of the movie is in which may attract this age of audiences. when looking back at our questionnaire it showed that there were more females which we had sampled that prefer thriller films however when comparing the opening films which we had analysed it showed that males were also equally targeted at, for this reason we have also used two characters and had one male and one female in order to attract both male and females however based on the plot of the movie we are expecting more male audiences.

What kind of media institution could distribute your product?
There are many institutions that could be able to distribute our products; these include Hollywood studios, internet releases or TV movies. There are many advantages for each of these options because they will all be able to attract our target audience. Since our film has been produced under a popular genre it could be published by Hollywood studios and this would help our movie being very popular with our target audience. There are many reasons why our movie wouldn’t be able to be able to be produced for a TV movie because it would only be able to be shown after a certain time due to the 15 certificate. This would therefore mean it wouldn’t be as successful and wouldn’t attract as many people, plus our film doesn’t star celebrities so Hollywood productions would be unlikely to produce our film. However when looking at the genre and target audience of our film, the internet appears to be the most beneficial way of promoting our film because teenagers use the internet on a daily basis therefore it will help to attract as many people as possible.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
We spent a lot of time conducting research and during this research we looked at a number of target audiences which could be appropriate for our film. However we came to the decision that an audience aged between 15-24 was best because we spent a lot of time on the pearl and dean site. We did this to research existing thriller films similar to our film and it also decides on a target audience compared to other movies which are similar, this therefore meant that the main age of our audience would be aged between 15 and 24. We also used our questionnaire which showed that the most popular ages of people who watched thriller films were in the age range. This results in us deciding that the minimum age of viewers who watch our film should be no younger than 15, this is due to the violence from the murder and language which may be displayed.

How did you attract/address your audience?
We have targeted our movie at teenagers and young people aged between 15-24 which has resulted in the minimum age of viewers to be 15. The content and plot of the movie therefore doesn’t make our film suitable for all audiences due to the plot, actions and language which will be demonstrated in the film. The fast camera movements and bumpy point of view shots have been used to make sure that film more realistic but to also help the audience feel a part of the scene and film. The change in scenery and events may be inappropriate for young people it will be difficult to understand but also the flashbacks have been used to help the audience understand more of what is going on than the psychiatrist himself. We have included some handheld camera movements because we wanted to capture the movement of the character through her own view. This was used mainly when we see the girl running away from her killer because it disguises what is happening but we can see what is happening around her and this adds confusion and mystery of why she is running away.

We created a questionnaire which looked at the ages of the people we sampled, our questionnaire shows that the majority of the people that we sampled were aged between 15-24. This affected our opening because it meant that the conventions and plot of the film had to be designed to attract this age range. the graph below shows that we have designed and targeted a teenage audience.
